Acoustic Guitar Bridge Types

Electric guitar bridge type?

I am gonna buy an electric guitar (been playing acoustic for a year) and I’m going to mostly be playing dropped d tuning. I heard about the different bridge types (tremolo, Rose Floyd, hardtail, etc.) and I’ve noticed that some of the bridge types can be a huge pain if you want to change the tuning of your guitar.

I want to buy an Ibanez but they mostly sell tremolo guitars. I don’t know if tremolos are worth buying if its gonna a hassle to tune. I also want this guitar to last me for a long time. I don’t want to realize I made a mistake buying it and be stuck with it for a while.

Help me T~T

Tremolo by it’s very nature, puts your guitar out of tune…and hopefully back in again. Not all tremolo systems do this well. Floyd Rose tremolos try to address this weakness. One thing they do is add a locking mechanism to lock the strings at the nut. This makes changing strings more complicated. If you plan to change back and forth between tunings, you’ll probably have to loosen the locking nut…unless the fine tuners on the bridge have enough adjustment in them.

No matter which tremolo system you use, if you are planning to use drop D tuning and nothing else, I don’t see a problem. You’ll set it up for the correct string tensions and be good to go. The issues arise when you want to change back and forth. If you need a tremolo bar for the music you hope to be playing, you’ll be able to deal with all the issues. If you don’t need tremolo, I think you’re better off finding a model without it. I’ve played the same electric guitar for 30 years. It doesn’t have tremolo, and I’ve never missed it.

Just a random thought: have you heard of the “Third Hand Capo” or the “Kyser Drop D capo”? http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Kyser-Drop-D-Capo?sku=361603&src=3WWRWXGB&ZYXSEM=0 I don’t see why you couldn’t leave your guitar in standard tuning then set the Third Hand to play dropped D. Put it on the second fret and leave your E string open. Then your tremolo concerns would become a non issue.
