Guitar setups: what to do and what to expect?
I think I might take a few days off and relax on my poor ole’ Epiphone. I’ve never actually had it looked at professionally: the only maintenance I’ve done is cosmetic and restringing as needed.
What all goes into “setting up” a guitar? As far as I’ve read thus far, it’s a matter of adjusting action (high vs low) and adjusting for different intonations (treble, bass, midrange, etc). I guess my question is about how exactly to get my guitar set up. I tend to play more chords and play mostly classic rock (trying to get into some blues), so I find myself using the rhythm pickups more. What should I know about different setups before I plunk down money for someone to play with it?
Also, along those lines: is there any benefit to a higher action?
I don’t know what the benefit to having a higher action would be, except that if your having annoying buzzing around a fret, then it should be raised. The lower it is, the easier it is to play.
A setup will include adjustment of the truss rod, which is good because your guitar will start to bow after awhile, due to the tension of the strings pulling on the neck. It will also include adjustment of the bridge, which will affect the string height. Last, they adjust the pickup height, which is really to make sure that they are set at the right level to each other. I had one that was noticeably quieter than the other. The higher they are, the louder they will get and will pickup more things, like harmonics, but also might start to pickup your pick hitting the strings if they are too high.
This is ALL subjective to the player. You should tell the guy what you’re looking for. Ask to have the guitar intonated and to have the guitar setup according to… well, to however you like it. If you want to try to have the bridge lower, then have him do it and see how you like it.
