Any Guitar theory recommendations for a beginner theory student?

I’ve been playing guitar for about 4 years, self taught,no lessons or anything of the sort. I am now interested in theory but it seems all to complicated. I’ve learnt all the notes on the fret board & such ,know location of all the keys,intervals like root notes, know a few scales. That sums up my theory knowledge.

I was wondering what areas of theory would be simple to learn,yet actually help with my guitar growth and playing abilities,even if semi hard ,Im dedicated.

Keep in mind I’m a blues/rock/funk type of dude ,love improvising. If you’ve got any wicked licks to pass on to improve my lick vocabulary that would be generous of you.

There are several books and videos on the market but the best way to learn about theory and harmony is to either take some classes at your local community college or take lesson with a good qualified local instructor, or both! Theory is not something that you can readily teach yourself. It requires having a thorough understanding of the mechanics of music and how to construct harmony within the given parameters.
There are some very basic concepts that are absolutely crucial. The first is that all western civilization music is based on the concept that the major scale is the “ruler” by which we “measure” all things musical. All of our chords and other scale forms, arpeggios, etc. are based upon the major scale. We build chords according to tertiary harmony as laid out by the major scale. The concept of root, third, fifth, seventh, etc. is known as tertiary harmony (harmony based in thirds). By taking every other note of the major scale we build chords. By doing this from every note of the scale we get the diatonic chords (chords of the major scale) The order on notes is the same in every key and so the order of diatonic chords is also the same in every key.
The major scale is based on a specific number of half and whole steps that does not change regardless of what key you are in. That order always W W H W W W H (w = whole step, H = half step) Because this order is always the same, we have different numbers of sharps and flats in every key. If you start on C and go W W H W W W H you get the C major scale (C D E F G A B C) it has no sharps or flats. If you start on the note G and apply the same order you get G A B C D E F# G which is the G major scale it has one sharp (F#). By using this same formula you get all of the keys in the circle of fifths.
These are things that you will need to learn in order to understand theory. I have not even scratched the surface with these concepts so you can see why I suggest that you take lessons and some classes to help you learn this stuff. I am sure that your guitar technique can definitely use some lessons too (no offense) I get a lot of “self taught” students that come to me because they do want to improve their knowledge of harmony and theory. They almost always have learned some bad habits in their playing technique. I work with these students to help them expand their abilities on both a physical and theoretical level. They often tell me “I wish i would have done this a long time ago!” Referring to how much they learn in a short time and how much better they understand music now.
There is nothing wrong with taking lessons. it is the best way to improve your abilities in a short time. College classes are usually very affordable and are also an excellent way to improve your understanding of music theory.
