Classical Guitar Microphone Preamps
How to start recording music at home
It is perfectly possible to make high quality recordings at home with computer technology today. No But you have to spend a lot of money on software and hardware (eg, high-quality microphones and sound cards) in order to achieve this goal. But do not worry! It is perfectly possible to make recordings at home that are very respectable in spending, while the quality only a relatively small amount of money! Even better news … is all pretty easy to do!
I like to think my home recording setup as the sketchbook of an artist. Is a to play with my ideas, record a voice few shots, left the basic bass line, some simple drums and maybe a guitar track behind him. This is when the magic really begins. In nearly all music software you can copy and paste individual parts (or whole sections) around, as you would in a processor texts. This makes it easier to exchange verses all, try a new drum beat in a different section … nothing you can really imagine.
Home studio software usually has a good selection of instruments built in, so you can add piano, strings, brass, more synth sounds and many of his songs. If you are an accomplished keyboard player can play all these different parts in the middle of a (music) keyboard. If not, you can simply play the notes in the screen (and you can change very easily if you play a wrong note.)
As I said, if you want to do this all at a very high level (studio quality) then you have to think about investing some serious money. But most of the software and hardware manufacturers have realized that there are a lot of people like you and me out there, and have produced some really good "Entry Level" to reduce his game versions of studio quality.
What you need to start.
In the most basic level, all you need to record at home is a microphone, sound card and a computer implementation recording of certain programs. Let's first hardware.
Microphones
You can use the same microphone that was used for live shows for the recording of their home base (the Shure SM58 is a proven classic), but I want to think about getting a studio quality condenser microphone if to record the highest voice quality.
Pop Shield
Pop shield is an inexpensive device that connects to the microphone stand, and let to blow hard and bursts to reach the microphone. Singers make these noises especially when singing 'P' and 'B' type sounds. You can pop shield base by stretching a pair of stockings over a wire hanger! Not be as good as a professional, but it will work quite well!
Sound Cards
Most sound cards that come with computers are not designed for use with music programs. If you try to use to music recording quality will be much lower and you will experience long delays that would disable the recording. If you want to do the recording at home then you will need a sound card that has been designed for this purpose.
There are several different types: -
Interior Cards – If you have a PC that has an internal card slot parts, then you can get a relatively cheap sound card that can be used for production national music. If you know what you are doing you can fit yourself, but if you are in doubt, please (for your own safety) to get someone who knows what they are doing to fit.
USB / FireWire – There are some great sound cards that connect via USB / FireWire. Usually cost a bit more but are really easy to transfer between computers if you use more than one.
Another thing to consider when you are buying a sound card is whether or not directly accept the signal from the microphone. It is almost certain to say this in the package / website where they buy, and may say something like 'preamplifier microphone. If not then you have to connect through your mixer.
Now let's talk software information
In the most basic level, the program works by recording each channel of music (eg, Voice, Guitar, Drums etc.) You can then adjust the volumes of each of the different themes, like you would live in a mixer. Each channel can be chopped separately and moved around (just like you can copy and paste text into a word processor). This is what makes the recording on computers much more powerful than the old style of tape recordings. Finally, you can add effects like compression, reverb and delay to the individual tracks (or entire mixture) and then the track is about end.
I've always used the software from a company called Steinberg. It is a very powerful software and is fairly easy to understand. Steinberg produces a quality program study very high, called Cubase 4. They also produce a smaller version for home users called Cubase 4 Essential and another piece of software aimed at beginners called Sequel. Several other companies also make high quality, affordable software for home recording.
Once you have the basics set up, just get the record, and try new things. Be sure to read the instructions to get the maximum benefit from these powerful pieces of software.
Good luck, and above all, enjoy your music!
