Famous Guitar: The Fender
Guitars have in one form or another for thousands of years. There are paintings in Egyptian tombs that show the tools that are similar. For all those thousands of years, the manufacture of instruments has been a specialized art, and the best instrument makers were music students themselves.
In the twentieth century all that changed. A new concept of electronic music opened the way for new tools and new composers. Music could be done from a computer that was not an instrument at all in any previous definition of the term. Even the BBC had its own radio studio which made the music everyday sounds, processed and played back, and generally manipulated to the point where the mundane is transformed into the extraordinary. Those involved were mostly musicians, but there was a new need in the world of music, for technicians.
Once this was Clarence Leonidas Fender an electronics technician whose company, Radio Fenders provide repair service for electronic devices of all kinds, including instrument amplifiers audio and music. His main interest was in the inadequacies of musical instruments and amplifiers so that in the 1930's started building some of the own. In the 40 had been established, with a partner, a business of design and manufacture of electronic instruments and in 1946 opened the Fender Electric Instrument Company. Electric guitars have been around since the 1920's, but Fender Broadcaster (Telecaster was known as the first) was the very first mass produced solid body electric guitar.
Introduced in 1949, the Telecaster was an innovation. Instead of an instrument with one hand, handmade, is built on an assembly line of mass-produced parts. A bolt on neck made simpler service (the neck can be removed and replaced) and electronics is easily accessible behind a control board. The sound of the telecaster was both warm and bright depending on the pickup selected, a feature which makes it very versatile and adapts to all styles of music, from country to rock and jazz.
The Telecaster guitar has been the choice for many famous musicians: George Harrison used a custom built telecaster rosewood Beatles album Let it be, and most famously Jimmy Page used a 1958 Telecaster (which he painted) on early albums by Led Zeppelin and also for the solo of "Stairway to Heaven."
In 1954 Fender Stratocaster introduced. With its sleek, contoured shape the Stratocaster was designed to be balanced when used in a standing position, something that was done popular with Buddy Holly, an early fan. The company was a great success. A brilliant marketing campaign was the beautiful young jumping out of airplanes, surfing and general have a good time, all while connected to a Stratocaster or Jazzmaster guitar. As a result of Fender became the manufacturer of the most successful electric guitar in the world.
In 1965 Leo Fender sold his company to CBS. Although it seemed at first, be a positive step, costs are reduced and was an overall reduction in quality. The company suffered from the competition, copies of their guitars are manufactured cheaply and in large numbers in the Far East. In 1985, the president of CBS Musical Instruments Division carry a purchase in which the employees of CBS bought Fender. Today top of Fender guitars range still made in California, while the new Fender Squier Corporation which also owns manufacturing lower price versions of Fender guitars the Far East with cheaper electronics. Therefore, if you are looking for a real high quality instrument in the Fender tradition, where do you go?
After selling his business in 1965, Leo Fender was making guitars. His last company G & L guitars sell instruments, but based on previous Fender design produced in small quantities, which allows for greater customization. Other innovations, such as magnetic field design pickups (which allow the player to set the output on a per string) that these instruments highly sought after.
