Electric Guitar Equalizer Settings

How I can set my guitar amp?
I just got my first electric guitar amp and when I plug in the guitar and play, just doesn't sound right. My configuration is: cleanliness level 5, treble, mid and low for the equalizer is 5, and the reverb level is 5 also. The same goes for my drive and the level of saturation. How I can set the amplifier for the guitar has a good classic or alt. rock sound?
I usually go all the equalizers in 12o'clock unless you are playing specific songs. Reverb to be in five years is very high and dirty sound when playing with distortion. Using reverb is better for the clean channel is nice especially when playing chords. As for the distortion is different for each amplifier has to find the right level for your amp, but too much will make your notes all tie together. Not to mention the tone knob on your guitar has much to do with it too, usually use the most because as the brightness, but you may prefer a little lower.
