Logging and history a witch
For Nyad Collins
Tala lived in a small town called Kokwanyo with their parents but stayed mostly with his aging grandmother, whose farm was just a stone's throw home. He helped with chores and care for their goats.
Tala had two older brothers who were upper primary school. They were the candidates, which is expected to sit for their final standard eight national examinations at the end of the year and worked hard; awakening early in the morning to go to school at six, before the villagers awoke to weed their crops.
Everyone in town knew of the twins and how prominently played in school. His parents were very happy with his performance that left no doubt that passing exams far end and Tala are reminded from time to time to follow.
Tala did not return to school in the afternoon because I was in class three and all the lower classes were not food after school, unlike their counterparts at higher levels. Therefore attended his grandmother's goats and collected firewood in the pasture.
Tala loved his grandmother to a large extent compared with their parents because the grandmother liked to rescue him when his mother threatened to beat him for minor errors not deserve any punches. For that reason, Tala spent all his free time with her, helping here and there additional tasks such as clearing the compound, hoe and transport his father's water well. That was very unlike his twin brothers, which only came to his grandmother's house to study and spend the night.
When nightfall came and crickets started singing merrily, her grandmother told them stories sweet, while watching the stars of heaven and waited to retire to sleep.
It was not that story of a magician, who came to penetrate the mind Tala from his grandmother narrated that one night. It was the story of an old witch who kidnapped and ate the tender flesh of children small that they refused to listen and obey their parents.
That story scared him and his suspicion was raised on the elderly neighbor who had all the gestures of a witch. The woman's name was Herewe and if someone was going to or coming from the pasture, one had to follow the path that runs near his hut.
In the worldwide school confessed to Tala, who was quite certain that the old was a witch. I wanted to ask her grandmother about it, but the fear of knowing that the eyes are Herewe I was doing to discourage him.
His mind could not help thinking that the Witch of the story of her grandmother was Herewe Old neighbor and felt sad and mad.
Always spent his hut on the way to pastures, found euphoria nose this way and that way, trying to smell any odor that may leave small hut. There was nothing peculiar stories though, but he swore to his friends that he felt a strange smell of human flesh boiling hot water drums. So many different versions about the witches were told again and again among their peers and then it left little doubt Herewe not suspect of being one of the witches.
"She only eats naughty children," which was what his grandmother had said about her in history. Since that day, tried to behave Tala responsibly in the care of his goats, he found himself for fear of being perceived or considered bad because that would be searched by a witch who lived far near them. The idea that he was being watched by Herewe could not leave their thoughts and walked suspiciously looking behind their shoulders for any strange creature that can be sent to seize him.
When he took his goats to pasture tried to be careful not to let anyone invade crops. Her grandmother call him a pastor and felt bad about it as abuse.
Once in the pasture, he played soccer with his friends until he went to the goats home on their own without someone to guide removed from the branch on farms of other people who eat green corn stalks and fleshy succulent leaves of cotton plants.
His grandmother was sick of the complaints brought to her about Tala carelessness with goats and warn her when she went home with the goats.
"Tala, if you have to play football, please be aware that the goats are grazing. I do not like fighting with my neighbors, "said the grandmother almost pleading.
It is not fair to blame logging altogether, tried the best I could in the care of the goats, but goats were brash and stubborn too. She slipped as he realized Tala that buried his head in a football game. Logging and point it would be folly to look at those farms.
His inability to control blatant goats made him fearful of the prospect that one day a witch would come by the neck on that account.
I could not put the thought and feeling away, and you Herewe took all the actions of their bad behaviors. If he met by chance in his way he quickly hid in the nearby mountain not to be seen by her.
2.
Tala and some of his friends seemed to have plausible reasons to believe that Herewe was a witch. She lived alone in a small hut surrounded by trees and fruits of all varieties. The fruits were always mature and attractive, but nobody would dare to go near the plants and eat them. Ni even the handles, whose branches hung over the fence on his farm. Most passers-by on their way, even without looking or admiring the fruits of yellow color gold.
Yet there was one and only one Juti, who had eaten fruits Herewe without anything happening to him. Juti was the best friend that day and Tala, Tala and their other friends had expected the diminished breath to see if Juti woke one day without being hospitalized – but nothing happened. In the end, was acclaimed as a great hero who had done the impossible.
Herewe of family was surrounded with dry branches of deadly thorns. It was impossible for anyone to enter it without using the door. The doors of his cabin remained closed throughout the day. Beside her hut, was a modern barn and the only of its kind in the whole Kokwanyo Village. He had a large wooden floor might lurk in fifty bags of dry seeds.
It had seemed Tala and his friends were not so secret within the family home Herewe. Like all witches he had found in fairy tales of his books, I had no husband or children knew.
He climbed on the roof of his hut with a thatched roof and small by itself without having someone to help him and it was very unlikely that women, especially in what older people like her.
No one in the village of Kokwanyo had no idea when he woke up in the morning. She always found her weeding crops as early as six years old when Tala brothers go to school. She would remain working on the farm until dark when the mother returned from the market.
His farm was very peculiar, all types of crops grown can be found within, from peanuts, beans, potatoes, vegetables, sorghum and maize.
Unlike her neighbors, she had no livestock. In its place was a giant black cat with blue eye balls. It was so big, in fact, twice as big as a cat average adult. Her meow was also a good scare. It was more of a crying baby to a cat meowing.
3.
So Tala came a day when he came face to face with Herewe.
It had all started on the football field where logging had been playing football with his friends for hours, as usual. The ball was made of pieces collected using plastic bags and artfully woven into a round shape with sisal fibers. The game was at its height when he discovered his goats were missing Tala. His team was leading by four goals to three and mounted a spirited rival pressure on them to grant the tie. That was the Tala suddenly came out of his goal of maintaining the position to verify their goats.
"Hey, I'm out … someone might come for the purpose of maintaining "shouted Juti Tala, who captained his team and the match referee at the same time.
"What Tala now? "Juti said angrily. Juti feared defeat and who will do anything within his means to make your team win. In fact, had refused to concede a goal before that date, saying it had scored when the goalkeeper was out of control goats. Yet even he is mentioned more just and therefore would be eligible for arbitrate over other contenders.
"My goats … I can not see them anywhere," Tala said frantically.
"It is better to date hurry and check the nearest farmhouse, "she said Juti.
Tala Juti knew what he meant, he mocked him, because as a whole world, who feared Herewe and unwilling to take a fight with her more serious problem such as goats destruction of their crops.
It was his farm that was closest to pitch and everyone with the goats were eager not to let his goats away in it.
4.
When he arrived Tala shamba Herewe, he walked in silence and looked over the hedge if it had goats in the goat inside, but it was not within sight. Instead, it was found Herewe face to face. It was as if he had been awaiting his coming.
"Oh, uh rabble, their goats …?" no words could come out with its clear Tala voice thick and was removed before the last word was removed.
He simply took to his heels, like a flock of sheep that had seen a stray dog. Not even look back to see if he was being pursued at all, but ran as fast as Herewe was right behind him in his place.
Those who knew him gave way rapidly since it was like a wild bull run from the pack. Its shape of the race was incredible to watch. He threw his hands in the air and shouted: "waai, waai" until he was deaf.
It was not until after they had gone a mile he decided stop crying and look back. There were no clouds coming, only the rainfall collected in the blue sky beyond. Cumulus nimbus clouds covered the sun and darkness seemed to move faster as if trying to rain. That only served to increase his fears and he started running towards the house again. He could not say whether goats had come home or have been adopted by Herewe.
When he got home, there were goats everywhere on campus.
"Oh, My God, what am I going to do, "he asked as he stood near the door to decide their next course of action.
"What I do, if she took them home? "he asked several questions without obvious answers come to mind and finally decided to leave before becoming too late or before her grandmother discovered what was happening.
"Tala, is that you come back here?" cried her grandmother.
"Yes, grandmother, "said Tala quickly.
"Where are my goats?" He asked in amazement. It was very rare to see no goats Tala and his grandmother knew something was a failure now.
"It was just eh, eh alone," Tala struggled to explain
"Eh, what? Lost my goat more shameless? "He asked angrily.
"I had come here, Grandma," tried Logging to sound calm but his voice trembled and shook.
"Oh my grandson Tala … When you start thinking like an adult?" Asked the grandmother.
"But …," Tala grandmother tried to explain but was cut off sharply.
"Do not go, silly rascal, come back here before night with my goats, "he shouted as he ran behind him was crazy again. I could not make up his mind and immediately felt the tears running down her cheeks.
5.
H e was sweating profusely and someone might think it had rained in the severely last for an hour. The idea of facing Herewe bothered bone marrow. "No way", matter that the branches of the cough.
To request Herewe on the whereabouts of his goats were something beyond his imagination.
"What if I'm stuck at a dinner?" Is he asked quietly.
That's when the thought of his friend Juti. He was the only one who could help, the only one who was terrified of witches. He recalled the incident when Juti ate mangoes without blinking your eyes or complain about any bitter taste.
~
Tala injured his way home from Juti 'over time. It was not far from his grandmother's house – just three miles away.
I knew Juti had gone home, by the look of the setting sun and prepares to milk his cows. Juti was a little more than Tala. Among the boys in his class, he was the sole owner a simba (a small hut for children), and all was well informed about the honey harvest and the universal. I knew that for many foodstuffs, such as how to avoid whipping teachers by ingestion of a small grain of the stone after tying a knot in a line of growth grass. It worked for him, but not for others as Tala. He who daily before going to school in the morning and returned home at noon without cane by any teacher. If the cane was then meant I had not performed the ritual on that day. But above all I knew how to keep evil spirits especially dreams, although we could not prove right or wrong.
There was that day he told everyone at school, how they were afraid of witches of pork bones. He had hidden as it flows through several under his bed in the small cabin to protect themselves.
He had intended Tala give a bone drilling, but his grandmother told him that God did not like as a way of thinking of its people.
However, on that particular day, he was the maintenance of both Juti asked about on their way to the farm Herewe.
"Are you with the bones that we spoke?"
"Yes, but only a drill for me," said Juti constantly.
"I would have liked to have a Pierce, I feel very bad," said Tala.
"Do not worry, a little is powerful enough for us, do not be nervous" Juti patted him gently as he explained well. "And in silence now, we're almost there."
Tala Juti followed by the back and pulled at his sleeve like a little kid I was watching a naughty puppy for the first time in his life.
6.
"Anybody home?" Juti shouted as he plunged his right hand in the pocket of his shorts to make sure everything was okay Tala.
There was no response and Tala's eyes were roaming around the grounds, looking for clues so that his goats could have been held, but nothing suggestive forthcoming. Darkness had begun to emerge, and every tree on the farm was a shadow of a human being either standing up straight or squatting.
"Grandma, you're home, however," calls Juti again. Still no answer came except for the echoes of his voice, he recovered with a reverberation that made terrible fear Tala to squirm inside. The birds cry sounded pleasant evening too depressing for him, as if it were some kind of threat spell disaster. Tala the heart beat was loud thumbing between the ribs and the urge to wet his pants and could not resist tickling a few drops out involuntarily.
"We better go back Juti, before something bad happens."
"No way, not until we are sure of where the goats," protested Juti.
"I doubt, do not appear to any place here is so quiet, "he replied softly for fear of Tala to the sound of his voice. The look of it was terrible, like someone in a high fever. He touched his forehead and beads of sweat streamed down his face unchecked.
Juti other hand was very relaxed and started a fruit from a branch of a tree hangs up and ate at the same time fear Tala hissed in protest.
"No please Juti, it is better to maintain what has brought us here."
"You coward! I feel so hungry after such a stressful game we played today," said Juti.
The huge black cat came out of nowhere and Tala was the first time and jumped on the arm of Juti.
"Oh, my God, look Juti" he whispered.
"I think she is somewhere around here, "said Juti and waited for the next thing to happen again. Tala moments had been avoiding since it was confirmed Herewe she was a witch was not loved.
It said Herewe and her cat were inseparable. Wherever he went, the cat to follow her steps and where the cat was, she would their footsteps.
"Is that Grandma?" Juti called darkness, because surely no one could see around.
7.
Hardly had the words left the mouth of Juti Herewe that occurred. Cat is meowing, "Eehaa, eehaa" which is pushing its attention on initially and followed it with a huge cloud rolling like a beetle with a heavy load of cow dung.
She was carrying a heavy bundle of firewood on their heads. Tala could not see clearly the difference between the bundle of firewood and the wearer. For him, it was like a mass of a body of a troll and even rang Juti stronger. The urge to wet his pants came again and gave the drops.
"What are two crooks doing in my house at this time? "she was asked to load your stack of wood on top of other packages already clearly established, sophisticated addition to your barn.
"Oh grandmother, who came to see you," Juti tried to sound pleasant and safe hiding after he had been eating behind him.
"Oh … to me, eh … or eat my mangoes?" It intelligently and Tala laughed almost ran. Anyone could say that he had been eating Juti something to just listen to how the words of his mouth.
But Tala could not see that and asked how he knew who had Juti Herewe won her mango. That would not be possible without a witch.
His suspicions grew and he felt trapped in Herewe networks. He wanted to plead for forgiveness before it was too late, but he lacked the courage to speak directly with her.
"And who is your friend … Why are you behind?" Herewe asked his black cat itself terrible wound in his leg. Tala hair stood up as if it were combed from the inside out. He waited for Juti say something Juti but remained silent until he felt his body tense as a tight wire a guitar, ready for any accent, at least negligent touch.
"Oh, this is my friend Tala. We have come to know, if you could have seen their goats," said Juti politely as he held in Tala.
"Oh, you are new eh "recognizes Tala and said," Oh waai, waai. "Trying to mimic the way Tala had wept when he saw that night and laughed softly Juti.
"I've killed today," finally a comment.
The word made to masturbate kill Tala Juti arm, but embraced Juti it hard to refrain from running away.
"Relax Tala, there is nothing to fear," convinced Juti.
Herewe was struggling to open the door by that time and did not realize the drama that went on back in silence. But Tala ultimately burst into tears and all attention turned to him. He was crying frantically making it difficult for Herewe to hear the words he was speaking.
"Forgive me, never again to play, I swear I do, I promise, never played when grazing goats, tears flows down her face and those words are muffled in the commotion.
"Calm down, please calm down," said Juti and Herewe was taken by surprise to realize what was going on between the two boys.
"What's the matter, what has happened to him?" Asked Herewe.
"He lost his goats" Juti said.
"But I saw this afternoon," said Herewe. "I was forbidden to enter my shamba"
"Yes, but it's nothing compared to the eye. Not even at home, "said Juti in his name and since he could not speak intelligibly.
"Best check home again, they could not go anywhere, it was too late. "
He spoke with such kindness and respect that Tala was driven out of their fears and whispered "Thanks grandma, no doubt.
"We then Grandma," said Juti as he returned to take the fruit voraciously bites and without fear.
"However, just a minute please," replied Herewe quickly and fumbled with the lock to open the wooden door of their small hut. Tala almost stopped breathing when Juti not rush to assure him that was fine.
Herewe, lit a small tin lamp and a dim light flickered on the small hut with life. Tala Herewe wondered what he was doing, calling on them to wait.
"You better here where I can see their ugly faces. "called them and got a bunch of ripe bananas in a basket hanging on the wall. She gave them each a generous group of five plump fruit pieces.
Tala could not believe what he saw and he took his part undecided.
"You can help yourself to these, "She offered.
"I'll have to visit the market before or not, my bananas will rot in here," he said almost to himself Herewe herself and her heavy body sank into an easy chair in the opposite end of the house.
The small hut was taken by surprise Tala, who had waited to see the drums full of water with pieces of human flesh, but there was nothing of that kind anywhere.
When he realized that he was eating Juti his banana was found buried with their teeth psyche and avidly in action.
He had been surprised when he learned Herewe speaking very quietly, without the hoarse voice that had come to identify with it. A new revelation was getting into it, it was like any other Herewe the grandmother in the village knew Kokwanyo. All the stories I had heard of Herewe melted slowly as his eyes and looked around the room, taking into account every detail in it.
There is a pot of water to preserve drinking water in the final was next to where the chair. The floor was smeared with cow dung and decorated with elegance like the floor his grandmother. Behind the door three cooking stones butts wood he had left after the previous firing. Black soot hung inside the like any other cabin roof had seen before.
8.
However, of importance was the large portrait in black and white a portrait of an old man dressed in military uniform hanging on the wall, in addition to the basket where he had taken Herewe bananas. He was the only intriguing element in the small cabin.
Tala wondered who was the old. I wanted to ask Juti but his thoughts were interrupted suddenly when Herewe spoke. She was exhausted, of course, hard work and leaned on the chair while talking to Juti. The words came from his mouth as if they fell on their own without their participation.
"Hey Juti milking cows is today, if you're still here now?" She asked.
"Oh, I'm going Grandma immediately, "Juti realized suddenly that the task of milking the cows are still waiting for him back home.
"It is better to date hurry and bring my part, I like to sleep early, I feel strangely exhausted today, "mused almost to herself, and please remind your mother about our meeting tomorrow. "
Tala could not follow the direction of the conversation was taking as finally occurred to him that Juti and Herewe know each other.
"And you are young, tell your grandma that I will not break your back for the sake of their goats," which was aimed at Tala.
"Yes, Grandma," replied mechanically, as if driven more by fear enormous courtesy.
When there Herewe compound left, the Tala Juti insisted that he explain things at once.
"Juti What's happening?" shaking the argument "Why do not you tell me relate to it?"
"Of course they are related. She is my grandmother and saw the portrait hanging on the wall belonged to my grandfather who died long ago, "said Juti.
"It has come down to the bone to ward off evil spirits? "Tala asked and touched his pockets Juti to feel for any hard object.
"I never had any bones, to be honest Tala" he replied. "I wanted to get people out for a walk when I realized what my grandmother mistook for a witch."
Tala could not believe it, he sought and emptied the entire contents of the three pockets to determine for himself, but found nothing like a bone.
He felt very bad about all the things I had Herewe and said about the idea of apologizing to Juti came to mind, however, dared not apologize because it was Juti he had to blame after all, for having driven a false belief about her grandmother to the other -. that she was a witch.
"I can not believe, why you are referring to his grandmother with his name?" Tala said. " Do not disrespect you? "
"No it is not, she is insisting that referred to that name. Herewe is the name of my grandfather, whose image was on the wall. "Explained Juti.
~
Herewe was a single grandmother in the village of Kokwanyo. She was a very hardworking woman and reserved lot. He does not like to socialize with people very often and instead spent his time working in the shamba to help your child in their education large family, he was proud. This was mainly because he was far above his contemporaries for being a husband and three daughters at a tender age. Juti was one of his many grandchildren.
Herewe was determined not to allow the elderly to weigh down and also their only child had a large family and was forcing for help from time to time whenever I could.
Each time the crop yields are poor that they would share their grain with her daughters in law and that gave every reason to work every day shamba to improve their extended family. It was after all, a wife of a soldier who had fought in the Second World War brought many medals she spoke of her courage. Hard work is the only way to live according to the will of her beloved husband had died long ago before children like Tala and Juti born.
~
Juti logging and where the division came to the track and supply a good night.
"If you can not find goat at home, let me know tomorrow morning, remember that it would be on Saturday, no school for us, "shouted Juti happy.
9.
When Tala arrived home, she found her grandmother waiting for him, was very concerned about where he had been in such a late hour of the night.
"Where have you been grandson?" I was almost sorry for having fired hard. "The goats arrived long ago stopped immediately and if you can see their stomachs distended: Do not be surprised if someone comes to report tomorrow that their crops have been destroyed. "
"No, not destroy someone's Shamba, Grandma," defended Tala.
"I have sung more than once, be careful about the goats today, but you can not even heed good advice, "she said carefully.
~
The day had been long in Tala, but so many good things over time had resulted in the end and there were many reasons to smile and be jovial.
If not the joy of finding their goats with security in the country then was the discovery of comfort that is not Harewe witch, after all – but a lovely and generous grandmother gave him sweat bananas and, above all, she was the grandmother of her friend Juti.
Thought recounting what had happened that day to his grandmother, but thought otherwise as she could have known about the game of football outside the law passed in fields when they were grazing.
When the time came that night history, did not, as usual, sit around the fireplace to watch the stars in the blue sky above, but they themselves included in the small hut, because he sprayed outside. And they heard the stories of the grandmother. Once again the story of a witch rebels abducted children and ate their meat tender and was told that all the time the story was much different and Tala realized the witch history could not have been Herewe by all means.
