How to Be Your Own Publicist

INTRO – THE STATE OF MUSIC ADVERTISING IN 2008

Music Television has changed in recent years. Gone are the days if one was only with a CD, a shoe-in and gone are the days when stay on the road for 6-10 months a year guaranteed a good living.

Here are the days of Pro Tools, cheap CD manufacturing (or DIY at home with a color printer) and the internet … Instant access to free music and total information overload at the tip of the finger! The Internet is a blessing (just about everyone with a pulse has access to it) and a curse (just about everyone with a pulse has access to it).

It are more bands on the road than ever before, published over 1,000 brand new every week and fewer and fewer new media writing about independent music. This combination, from a traditional journalist point of view is fatal. However, it is getting even for an indie artist for attention possible.

Public relations, how to build a fan base takes time, commitment and effort. If you do a PR campaign, the effort sometimes the result is compared Herculean task (if the result DMS solely on how many articles get written).

Advertising is time consuming and detail-oriented. But with a little planning and focus, you can Spin your own publicity wheel – all it takes is foresight, organization and patience.

An artist who understands advertising is good plans and an artist that most PR is replaced. The good news is that the public process for any band, no matter how big or small, is very similar. Of course, the size of publications in the article, you can be very different (this is on what kind of music at the moment combined with record sales and label status based hot).

For this article, I interviewed two music journalists. Your comments and suggestions are included throughout. I also have several web links to help you.

Writer, that will come across are:

Kristi Singer – Writes for: American Songwriter, singer and musician Magazine, Sun News and The Wilmington Star News, among others.

Waleed Rashidi – Writes for: Alternative Press, Modern Drummer, Alarm, mean street, the law of inertia, and E-Online among others.

It made Fun to interview writers who usually interview my artists. It was instructive, their opinions about what they get to see (and what not) of Bands.

PART I – the printed press kit

A printing press is a critical component to add when sending your CD to everyone in the industry, the details and background information to know about you. Your press kit, which goes to journalists should be easily send from you to get gigs (this should be listed under all four elements PLUS past touring history in detail, and include your stage act).

MYTH: I do not need a Press Kit – people can see all of my information on my website.

TRUTH: Your press kit is still a vital and important component to your overall Marketing strategy.

Writers are very busy people who work under constant deadline pressure, so that never met a writer, information about your band . Get Press kits help them access information quickly and efficiently. A big fat press kit in a folder will not impress. Writers are only a press kit, that is not concise and irritated to the point.

The 4 steps: The first step in your journey is to create a press kit, which consists of four steps:

The bio-

The photo postcard

The articles or advertisements, articles and CD reviews

The CD

Step 1: The Bio

Create a page that is organic to read concise and interesting.

TIP: Many music journalists write bios as well as articles, so if you have a great profile to read on a tape in a local newspaper, in a blog, an online "magazine or in a music magazine, do not hesitate – that writers trace down and ask him whether he or she writes band BIOS. I suggest you update your bio keep every few months, fresh and current.

Waleed: A bio should not be extensive. I want a general idea of the band's history and some important shows (but please do not show a whole story). I love the "recommended if you like" line. I know some artists hate to compare to others, but I definitely so – it is easier to sort.

Add your pitch / USP compared to the top of the page. Create an introduction to the sums of your sound, style and attitude in a few short sentences. This way, if a writer is pressed for time is, he can just a sentence or two from your bio and place it directly in the publication. If you try to make a script to dig deep for the essential, the writer will most likely put your press kit aside and look at one of the other 30 press kits that arrived that week.

Avoid vague clichés such as: melodic, brilliant harmonies, masterful guitar playing, tight rhythm section, etc. These are terms that are used to describe artists and music.

TIP: Try a bio with the assumption that a large majority of music critics can never create, listen to your CD. In addition, as a rule writer copy under deadline pressure to produce – so many CDs left behind. But that does not mean that you do not select a large calendar or photo inclusion.

STEP 2: Photo

It is very hard to create a great band photo. In the thousands that I just had the creativity and depth have encountered. I know it is possible to arrange a cheesy photo shoot, but if you take this part seriously you deeply benefit in the long run.

Create a photo clear, light and eye-catching is. Five musicians sitting on a couch or backed against the wall is not interesting. If you have a friend who knows how to use Photoshop, I recommend you enroll to help him or her some funky editing.

MYTH: We need to have 8 X 10 photos

TRUTH: Gone are the days The 8X10! Color postcards are more versatile and newspapers are the photos they run download directly from your website!

8X10 photos are the industry standard, but they are no longer the norm. My company recommends that you print 3X5 or 4X6 band double 4 / 4 color postcards on one side. They look great and professional and extra postcards not used in press kits, people can be sent to your mailing list, or you can give it away at gigs.

You must make sure your photo downloadable n 300dpi on your site, with journalists, the images that can very easily to them. Make sure the jpg is identified correctly after it with your name downloaded. I suggest adding more colored images vertically and horizontally on your photos page so editors can select the ones they want.

Also, your album cover to download as well so if it is able to review a CD album cover to have it!

Postcards should be a picture of the band on one side and a picture of your album cover with the URL of your website on the other side. You can also submit your release date of a new album, your contact numbers and a quote about the band's sound from the media or from your bio.

There are many great inexpensive printers online.

Waleed: The best types of photos are those that Harvesting position to a vertical or horizontal format, sometimes, when I fill a hole in the magazine that I have a photo, it must fit in each frame may be. I also like photos that have room around the photo – this way I can send text to the photo. I want a picture with a band in the way she describes. A junkie band should be in a junkyard a clean band should be in a cleaner environment – the environment, wardrobe and location are all very important, as is creativity. I get an overkill of fisheye lenses and overkill on oversaturated colors – try not to copy much of what is going on.

TIP: Do not make journalists Hunting around for the photos – they will go to other place to tackle them. Downloadable color photographs should be available on your website, and should be at least 300 dpi and easy-to-find and downloadable with less than 3 clicks. Place the band members names from left to right (left) to give under the left band photo journalists a point of reference. (Many publications share photos with all band members names from left to right to save the authors of the effort spared to ask for the names.)

STEP 3: Articles, quotes and CD reviews

Getting that first article written about you may feel be daunting. Two places to start are your local hometown Papers (barring you do not live in NYC or Los Angeles) and all the music site you like.

TIP: You can archive additional articles on your site when reading a writer wants more than that he visit her website for more information. is located – if you have not written about you, not to worry soon change.

TIP: Use related to the Google and MySpace and Facebook as a resource, or work backwards and search for indie bands that you own would compare. Call or e-mail the reviewers who wrote about her present, and politely ask if you send them your CD for examination. This is a much better technology than the old-school method, a "media list" and blindly mailing precious materials in bulk.

Always Follow Up

Kristi: 75% of bands do not follow with me aggressively enough – I am often on deadline and I'm going to ask a band to call me back in a week and most never do.

I keep new CDS in 3 piles in my office:

The one I'm writing about, because it is assigned.

I really want this to my Editors pitch, because I think she will like it.

I do not know what these CDs, and no one followed me through this, so I never get to them.

There could be some wonderful and appropriate CDs sitting in my office that I write about it, but if no one beat me to it over usually see.

Waleed: I think it's important to follow up on all mailings. 75 to 80% of indie bands that I never send stuff to follow up, and those CDs always fall through the cracks.

Step 4: The CD

The CD artwork, like the press kit, must be well thought out. They should fit your press kits so that they are in line with your CD to look for. In this way, when a writer opens a package of press kit and the CD look like they belong together. Do not bother sending pre-burn the CD, unless the author requests this. Detailed artwork is always preferred.

Kristi: I enjoy always full of art CDs – advances and burned CDs are not so fascinating. Presentation is very important.

Waleed: My Micro pet peeve is that I do not like CDs that do not have sleeves (or at least spines). If a CD in a bag or a thin cover makes the CD can not be found.

A couple of months, "PR-List" (a group of music publishers about 400 of us) ran a survey of music journalists to ask if she would take the downloads, CDs, and the overwhelming response was – send me the CD-FUL with images and not send anything!

So – send journalists for the full CD with color artwork and above all readable SPINE, so that your CD in the Piles can be found if you follow-up call.

TIP: Put your phone number and contact information in the CD so if it is separated from the press kit, white the author how to contact you. Also, "Recommended Tracks" stickers are ideal for the press (which to no more than two or three varieties).

Tip: Do not precious CDs! That is, if you are sure a writer actually writes CD reviews (few journalists are given the space to run it these days, verify, You first).

Waleed: I like well-organized packages and the stapled together so that I can take a minute to get through it and flip through cohesive Information. And PLEASE put as much contact information anywhere – on the CD, on the bio and the photo. We get a lot of magazines, without a band name on it and we sometimes stack Photos separately for our photo editors. If there is no name or number or a URL on the photos they will never get used.

PART 2 – Getting the word out

Internet – How to compose your online press materials

I suggest first that you duplicate your completed electronic press kit. Either a PDF of it, that you send by writers as attachments or open an account with Sonicbids and drop all your information in an EPC

Your Website

If you do not already have an updated website that you are proud to show to the world, get an ASAP! Register a memorable name and remember. Com much easier than net or org ..

TIP: My Favourite DIY Website Editor was created by my friend Derek Sivers of CD Baby – is brilliant, it is host baby and called it. A step-by-step instructions show you how you is the ideal location for you and it will only take a few minutes, it only $ 20 per month and includes a place to get your Online press kit, email list mailer and dashboard, add your concert calendar, streaming audio, guestbook, news / journal, and much more.

If you work with host baby for your domain hosting you can import a WordPress template and save the trouble for FREE! Just get in touch, and it will set it up for you. I suggest [http://www.yourdomainname.com/blog]

Press Tour – As you know from your press materials

Planning PR for any tour 6-8 weeks before you leave. Once a concert is booked, the organizers ask for the club press list (most clubs). The promoters are dependent on this local press to help sell tickets. the list by e-mail have to reach and to move them to the relevant journalists. Do not be shy – you are working with the promoter, happen to the show and promoters love it when the show will be made well known.

TIP: Ask the promoter which writers like CDs for review and to which do not need. Also be sure that with the promoter that are his favorite authors and ask what your type of music you.

Kristi: I enjoy when the band adds a personal touch with their press kit. A short and sweet note is a very personal touch that really makes a big difference.

TIP: If the local promoter has had a publicist, that journalist do their job. Pack everything up and send it to the promoter, the publicist. This writer knows the writer in his home town and will help materially to.

Do not get territorial about your PR! Anyone who is willing to help should do so.

Finding Publications

If not push the club on a list, you can easily pick up The Musician's Atlas. They have a big list of publications in all 50 states with the name of the music department at each.

http://www.musiciansatlas.com/

Or Just search Google or Yahoo for a good target list.

TIP: With monthly publications, if you do not at least six to eight Weeks, do not bother to send it.

Work your niche Angles

Work any angle you may have – is the singer in the band of Jewish or Irish? Is anyone in the band a parent? Most major markets have a Jewish publication, an Irish publication and a parenting magazine, and these are large-angle to work.

TIP: Many smaller local publications only cover events and people from certain areas, so if anyone is in the band from the city They are free, make sure you can know the local newsrooms.

According to above the critical

It is important that you follow on. As you saw in part to read 1 of this article, 75% of all indie bands never follow-up and writers do not contain bands that they do not know if they do not listen to them. When you call the writer, Understand that you leave messages 90% of the time. Leave you with a brief message, your phone number and email address, and your show date and place are to spark the Schreiber's memory. 9 of 10 writers will not call you back, that's OK, because you have given them everything they need. When they get to do on the phone, do not be afraid to tell the promoter recommended that you always calls on them to the show. Do not let all that all voice mail that discourage you. I have hundreds placing of articles, mentions and photos without ever talking to the author.

Waleed: The only advice I would give an indie artist is: Be tactful about your pitches and make sure that listening to a writer, you join thousands of other bands in a month, but achieving no fear. It is a journalist's task to listen to new music. Do not give up, but at the same time not bomb – bear in mind not only about your career, but also her career as well.

Perseverance

If you have a completely new band and you are worried because a paper is not the first time you discovered that you do not us Paper information every time you play in the area. I've never seen a writer, that several press kits ignored by the same band sent and again encountered. It some tours may take in every market, but the more a writer can be seen over time, the more likely he will write about you.

Patience have

The first few times you play a market, you can not get all the press. PR is a slow-moving vehicles, taking the time to get results can. I have some bands that are required to have to go through a market three or four times before results started working in the press. When sending materials to repeatedly remind a refresher blurb of the writer of your style. Always include the following: shows date, time, age, ticket price, name and address Club, time, and who on the bill. Do not make writers hunt around for the event info. Make their job as easy as possible by providing as much information. Also keep in mind that some authors probably do not you write over and over again. If you continually make the same markets, is a great tactic To change your postcard every few months.

Bonus Round – More Marketing Elements

Posters

Posters are a great form of PR, and they must not cost a fortune. I recommend about 4 / 4 color poster, and it's a good idea, a place on the ground, can fill out or the promoter of the show info.

The best way to make posters to buy 11×17 colored paper from your local paper store (comes in lots of 500) and run off copies at the copy shop (about 7-10 per cent Units). Make several copies of white and include these with your color posters – So, the promoter can make extras, if needed.

TIP: When you ask The organizers, who like many posters as they sent them along with the press kits. After a few days, it is best to call and verify that the posters and press material were received and are up to.

Your Street Team

Try to register your biggest fan, his head on the street team. Set them responsible to achieve person will join the other fans who visit the street team in every market you. In exchange for some tickets for the show, some merch and some love from you, your sales force put up posters, hand out fliers and postcards, and talk to their college newspaper about writing a function or the local Radio stations on your CD spinning.

If you can not play, that's OK – they can help you make your MySpace page and hit other social networking sites.

TIP: Street Team Management: To start a street team, fill out a registration column on your mailing list and a form on your website. and manage Your street team with the free tools in … Ariel Hyatt founded Ariel Publicity & Cyber PR 11 years ago and her company has more than 1,000 working musicians and bands from all genres.
