Guitar D Chord Chart

Will this plan to learn guitar work?
okay, so i am going to be teaching myself guitar.
and i think i know what i’m going to do…
first, i’m going to learn all the major chords.
(would anyone mind telling me what those are?)
and then i’ll start learning songs…
would that work?
i’m going to be buying “guitar method book 1″ from hal leonard and i’m also going to try to find his book “ultimate guitar chord chart book” or something like that.
so my questions:
what are the major chords? (i already know c and e minor..aren’t you proud!? 
)
would learning the major chords first and then trying to put songs together work?
any other book recommendations?
and any other tips?

i just want to start out slow…playing songs that are already out there is good, right? and then i’ll move onto more difficult stuff.
i can’t take lessons. i had to choose between voice and guitar. and i chose voice. i figured that i could teach myself guitar. a lot of people have done it before, right?
It depends where you want to go with your guitar. Do you want to just strum along with some songs in your room? Yeah, those books will be good enough. Do you want to actually sound good and play paying-gigs someday? Then there is only one solution to make you into a GOOD guitarist: LESSONS! Take lessons from a qualified music teacher.
Let me tell you something. I took lessons from age 8 until 18. The dude I took guitar lessons from was an old-time famous jazz guitarist from the 1930’s who must have been around 70 by the time I met him.. He was real hard on me, and when I was young, I didn’t want to learn any of the stuff he made me learn. But, by the time I was 15 or 16, there was not a teenage kid in my town who could play better than me… and maybe only a 2-3 adults who could play better in the entire SF Bay Area. You know why? Because real lessons make the difference. I even got a college scholarship as a consequence of those lessons. And now, many years later, and dozens of bands later, I can tell you I have NEVER played with even one fully self-taught guitarist who was any good. Sure, you’ll hear stories about Eddie Van Halen and others being self-taught, but it’s usually a lie meant to perpetuate a myth. Figure out a way to pay for lessons. Get a job @ Mickey D’s or whatever and use that money. No excuses. Quit being lazy. Twice a week would be optimal. After you are taking lessons, make SURE that you practice sufficiently to master each lesson. It will likely take a few hours a day. If you do all that, you’ll be pretty good after a while.
