what is a guitar intonation?
im not sure what that is. if you guys/girls would be so kind and tell me what it is and other stuff surrounding that topic that would be fantastic. thanks for your help.
intonation is adjusting the guitar (mostly the guitar’s saddle – or saddles, but also the nut and truss rod) to make sure that when you hit any given note, all the rest of the notes are tuned in proper relation to that one.
to give you an idea of how this works, just look at the bridge on your guitar right where the string meets the saddle. you’ll notice on an electric guitar that the saddle is adjustable on the back of it, typically with a screwdriver.
think about what happens when you fret a note and pick the string…. the pitch of that string is now higher than when it was open. now if you go to the next fret, it’s even higher pitched. now, really all you’re doing is shortening the amount of string that can vibrate. well, by adjusting the saddles, you can lenthen or shorten the amount of string vibrating.
if the intonation isnt properly set, you might hit a note… say, the F note at the first fret, and then hit the F at the 13th fret, and they wouldnt both be tuned to F. one might be F, but the other might be F#, or might be E.
so, intonation is REALLY important to being able to play up and down the whole neck. imagine playing a 6 string chord if none of the strings were intonated to each other. it would sound HORRIBLE. no guitar is PERFECTLY intonated, its virtually impossible, but thats ok. and when you change the bow of the neck, or the height/placement of the nut, it changes your intonation a little.
on most newer acoustic guitars, you’ll notice that the bridge has one string set back farther than the other, thats for better intonation. they call that a “compensated bridge”
