Guitar Jazz Scales Improvisation

Listening to Jazz / improvisation on the guitar?
I've always been curious as jazz guitarists like Pat Metheny can get the sounds that make your guitar solos. What scale should I use? How do they do? Can someone explain. Thank you very much.
Jazz usually but does not always mean, however, larger scale, through the tone, improvisation, combining scales, playing "outside" or notes that are not contained at the appropriate scale of the rope (which is playing a solo) from. Unlike rock, which usually involves Major and minor pentatonic scale, the jazz is more complex, melodies and complex harmonies.
