The Art of Fast Guitar – An Alternate Picking Masterclass

For many guitarists I meet and talk about the possibility of running at super speed by and seems to get shed like an impossible task. Let me assure you right now that it is not, it's only a matter of practice often and practice good. With a few simple guidelines and exercises you will be shredding away like Herman Li in a very short time. Well, maybe not time, but certainly not as long as you might think.

Many people associate fast alternate picking with terrible 80s hair metal and too many guitarists mindless solos just play up and down scales showing off, how fast they play. While this is certainly true to play for a good number of players, fast and actually controls is an important part of having good all-round technique, and it has in the recent years have been overlooked.

It seems nearly 20 years at the start to have more acceptable to play fast and there was rising a large number of bands in popularity recently that have virtuoso guitar performers at their peak.

So in this article, I would point out, some steps to help can with your alternate picking, giving your solos that speed boost just when they need it. First things first, what is alternate picking?

Alternate picking is simply a technique to which the notes in a continuous Up and down motion with a plectrum. This allows you to sync your hands to the beat and take accurate and in time. I usually find it best to synch your sacrifice in time, when you hold the liquid up and down motion then the rest of the notes come by itself.

So, where do I start?

The key to is to play really fast at the beginning very slowly. By repeating the actions very slowly, but that you're programming the actions into the hands and eventually they will become part of muscle memory. Once learned slowly it will be much easier to take the same licks and the construction of speed. The absolutely necessary what you have to have is a metronome. Without a metronome to sync your picking, it is almost impossible to get good technology.

Begin by an exercise or lick that you want to learn. Just a simple 1234 chromatic pattern is good, or three notes per string ascending and descending on a major scale too well. Once you find the course you want to play make sure it goes all the way up, and then back down. A key mistake many players make, including me, it's running very good play, but a way to skip the other in the direction. For a long time I could play ascending scales quite good, but it has to learn me some time to descend to the same standard.

Play up your run and down very very slowly. Make sure the metronome Time keeping. Synch your cutting back on the clicks of the metronome. The easiest way to get started playing four notes per string and changing string on each beat to get. Start very slowly, move to 40-50bpm and only in small increments as you feel comfortable. At some point you will fly along 200bpm, just be patient and never move on until you select each note clean and in time.

I would do these exercises for around an hour a day, which remain to clean and keep the time. Now, of course plays up and down, by one click for an hour is not the most interesting thing to do on the guitar, but it pays huge dividends later.

I found it useful to have some TV or a Film during practice this kind of Clock exercises. Keep picking through a couple of Simpsons episodes, and you have made a really useful practical training, so make Ensure that metronome louder than your TV.
