Alert! Caveats for Your First Guitar Purchase

Have you determined your budget? It is important to keep your budget low when shopping for your first guitar. You will want to stay within about $200-$300. Until you or the new musician gets comfortable with the routine and figures out if they really do like it, it is wise to be conservative on the first purchase, then graduate. Hopefully the new musician has at least spent some time around an advanced player, this way he or she will be more certain of their desire to learn. Then have the musician friend assist in picking out the instrument, if you are uncertain.

If you have the opportunity to visit a music store you will want to ask to see one of the higher end guitars. Make sure that the guitar is tuned to standard pitch or concert tuning. The sales person will be glad to do this. Now you will be able to compare this guitar with others in your price range, giving you a benchmark for comparing sounds. Look for buzzing sounds and loose or wiggly parts. If noticed, move to the next choice. Watch out for pushy salesman as they tend to work on commission.

The look and feel of the instrument is also very important. The new musician will need to hold the instrument sitting and standing as they search for a comfortable fit. There are a number of shapes and sizes and comfort is important. Wide guitar necks and bodies can be awkward for smaller individuals. If the right guitar is found in a store, you will want to compare pricing. A good alternative is an online store, as they can generally be more competitive on their prices. You will need to get the make and model number for this comparison.

Shipping cost is normally waived but this is not always the case. The online approach made significant improvements in the last few years due to the fact that they know that they are competing with the in-store experience.
