Guitar Riffs

How do you go about creating guitar riffs?
I am familiar with the basics such as chords, scales, and notes the mast. I look riffs of Jimmy Page, Gary Lucas, and Eric Clapton did, but there is no type of structure of music theory than I can see (for example, out of a scale to create a riff.) Methods or explanations? Thank you.
The easiest way riffs are based on scales. These may sound good (like the riff at the end of Knights of Cydonia by Muse), but if you think breaking scale to create something that sounds dissonant, then it can sound very cool too. In addition, varying chord structures (such as investments) and arpeggiating or break strings is an easy way to make a good riff. You mentioned Jimmy Page – the riff from Stairway to Heaven is based on the chord of A minor, but broken, and then added the seventh (I think) and then goes down the D minor triad. Its pretty simple if you work outside the structures. Good luck!
