I need help housebreaking my new puppy, he was already sort of pee pad trained when I got him?
He is kind of trained to use the pee pad, he was like that when I got him a few days ago and he’s 7 weeks old. The problem is, I was planning on crate training him, but he cries unless he sleeps in bed with me, or if he’s not always near me. He doesn’t pee on my bed though, he wakes me up to put him on the floor so he can use his pee pad, and then he cries to get back on my bed. He’s a jack russell by the way. Anyway, he pees on everything that’s like a pee pad, like if there’s a blanket on the floor he’ll pee on that, and on rugs, and he even peed on my guitar strap that was on the floor. He pees on the pee pad a lot, but he’s peed on the floor a few times too. I know he’s trying, but I want to get him to pee outside. How do I train him to let me know when he wants outside to go pee, or poo? Any help is great. Thanks.
Welcome to puppy ownership (though 7 weeks is a bit too young to be away from the dam)…..they cry often and won’t sleep through the night right away. In addition, they are master manipulators and WILL play you like a fiddle if given the opportunity.
That is the problem with pee pad training….it encourages (in most cases) in-home elimination. Training him to eliminate outdoors is the best way to go.
Start by taking him out hourly (plus 15 minutes after eating, drinking, or playing). When he eliminates outside, offer physical and verbal praise to reinforce the good behavior (yes, you will have to praise him like mad over pee/poop but it will be worth your neighbors staring).
Take him outside via the same door every time. Eventually, as he ages, he will learn to go to that door when he needs to eliminate.
It will take time. Expect accidents. But if you’re patient and consistant he’ll get it.
