How do i use the vibrato arm? Ive been playing guitar for 2years, but only 1month with an electric one
The vibrato arm (aka Whammy Bar, Tremolo, Dive-Bar, etc.) is used to accent chords and single note runs by loosening or tightening the tension of the strings, thereby raising (tighter) or lowering (looser) the pitch.
When overused, the whammy distracts an audience from WHAT you’re playing with HOW you’re playing it.
One common problem with whammy-bars is that the constant string tension variation causes the strings to go out of pitch; another issue arises if your guitar has poorly finished saddle or nut string slots. If the string catches too often on the nut or saddle, the increased wear will cause your strings to break more frequently.
Many manufacturers have produced more refined versions of the traditional whammy-bar two-point tremolo system. Floyd Rose produces the most popular, with a locking nut to limit string slippage and fine tuners at the bridge for tuning convenience. This set-up is what players like Vai and Van Halen use for their pyrotechnics.
The basic function of a tremolo is that pressing the bar toward the strings lifts the rear of the tailblock, lowering the bridge. If your guitar has a “floating bridge” set-up, then pulling the bar away from the strings will raise the pitch. Just don’t get crazy with it: excessive bending can cause damage to the bridge ang guitar body.
