Bobby Darin

Early years

Bobby Darin was a poor, working-Italian-American family in the Bronx, New Born York. The person, thought of his father (who actually was his grandfather) died in prison a few months before he was born. It was the height of the Great Depression, and he once remarked that his crib was a cardboard box, later a dresser drawer. He was first raised by his mother, Polly, and his sister Nina, Home Relief fed up Nina later married and raised a family with her new husband Charlie Maffia. It was only an adult, he Nina, 17 years older when he learned was actually his birth mother, and that Polly was the woman he thought his mother was really his grandmother. He was never the identity of his biological father, other than saying that his birth father had no idea Nina was pregnant, and thus never knew that Bobby was told, not born. Polly mothered him well, despite her own medical history consequence of their addiction to morphine. It was Polly who took the young Bobby to what the old vaudeville circuit in New York next, places like the Bronx Opera House and RKO Jefferson in Manhattan, where he received his first showbiz inspiration, and where he saw artists such as Sophie Tucker, whom he loved.

It was weak and sickly as a child, and from the age of 8, was more affected by recurrent attacks of rheumatic fever. The disease left him with a seriously weakened heart. Overheard a doctor tell his mother he would be lucky to reach the age of 16, lived there with the constant knowledge that his life short would be that motivates him to use his talents. He was driven by his poverty and disease to make something of his life and his innate talent for Music when he was a teenager, he could play several instruments, including piano, drums and guitar. He later added harmonica and xylophone.

An outstanding student, graduated from the prestigious Bronx High Dario School of Science and went on to attend Hunter College for a scholarship. Want a career in the New York theater, he left to play for the school to small nightclubs, the city with a musical combo. And resort in the Catskill Mountains, he was both a busboy and an entertainer. To most teenagers Bobby was a comedy drummer and an ambitious, but not ground singer.

As usual, with first-generation Americans at the time he changed his Italian family name to a less ethnic sounding. He chose the name "Bobby" because he has been called, that as a child. It said he chose because he had seen a malfunctioning electrical sign at a Chinese restaurant reading "This Duck" rather than "Mandarin Duck, "and he thought:". Darin "looked good He later said that the name was randomly selected from the phone book, either by himself or by his publicist. It was also suggested that he used the word "daring" in order to satisfy his ambitions. None of these stories have been checked. [Edit]

Music Career

What really moves things along for It was his songwriting Partnership formed in 1955, with other Bronx Science student Don Kirshner. In 1956 his agent negotiated a contract for him with Decca Records, where Bill Haley & The Comets had risen to fame. However, this was a time when rock and roll was still in its infancy and the number was in a position record companies and arrangers in the field very limited.

A member of the now famous Brill Building songwriters of the past gang fight, which was later found success Dario then up-and-coming singer Connie Francis introduced. Bobby's manager arranged for Darin to help write several songs for Connie in order to help jump start her singing career. First, the two artists do not see eye to eye on all possible material, but after a few weeks Bobby and Connie developed a romantic interest in each other. Allegedly Connie had a very strict Italian father who would separate the couple, if possible. When Connie's father learned that Bobby had the two lovers to kidnap Connie's proposed one shows, he ran Darin out of the building while waving a pistol Bobby never told his daughter again.

Bobby saw Connie only twice after that happens, at a time when the two were scheduled to sing together for a TV show and again later when Connie on the TV series This Is Your Life was the spotlight. Connie said, do not marry that Bobby was the biggest mistake of her life. She used the title words of the song "My First Real Love" (A song-It Kirshner had taken them and on which Darin had played drums), when she said: "Well, he was my first love and I never stopped to love him all my life. "Connie Francis also said that she and Dario sometimes to the Apollo Theater to go see artists like James Brown and Ray Charles," we were the only white people in the audience ", and when It was first recorded for Decca was an early piece of black music in 1956, the first time by the Louisiana singer Lead Belly, Rock Line Iceland – even though the immediate inspiration was Lonnie Donegan's skiffle version. He sang it on the Dorsey Brothers TV show, a big deal at the time, with the lyrics written on the palms, if he forget what he did. But has recorded the songs for Decca very little business.

This left Decca and Atlantic Records (ATCO), where he wrote and arranged music for himself and others to sign. There, after three mediocre recordings, his career took in 1958, when he wrote and recorded "Splish Splash". The song was an instant hit and sold more than a million copies. "Splish Splash" was written by radio DJ Murray "Murray the K" Kaufman, the Dario bet that he did not write a song that began with the words, "Splish Splash I was Takin 'A bath ", as Murray's mother suggested. On a snowy night in early 1958 was in this alone in the studio and recorded a demo of" Splish Splash ". Finally, together with her writing credits. More hits followed in the same style followed included.

In 1959, Bobby recorded Darin "Dream Lover," a ballad that became a multi-million-seller. Then came financial success and with it came the ability to more so-called creative control to demand. Some on the label wanted a Fats Domino-ish album, but Darin's dedicated publicist and advisor Harriet "Hesh" water was a "big, vibrating, album of standards, "and how she later said she walked down 57th Street when it said Darin" Hesh, do not worry, you will see your album . Get "His next album," Mack the Knife "was the classic standard from Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera Opera: It gave the tune a vamping jazz-pop interpretation which he consciously modeled on the style of Frankie Laine. The song went to No. 1 on sale in the charts for nine weeks over a million copies and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year 1960th It was the Grammy Award for Best New Artist voted this year. "Mack The Knife" has since been honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. He followed "Mack" with "Beyond the Sea", a jazzy French-English version of the song hit Charles Trenet "La Mer".

The tracks were produced by Atlantic founder Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegn with staff producer Jerry Wexler and brilliant arrangements presented Richard Wess. Driven by the success of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea," Darin was a hot commodity. He set all-time attendance at the famous Copacabana nightclub in New York City, where it was not unusual for fans start all the way around the block for tickets to make if from Dario. The Copacabana sold so many seats for Dario's shows that on the dance floor, which usually had to fill part of the performance area, with additional seating. Darin also headlined at the major casinos in Las Vegas.

Sammy Davis Jr., an exceptionally versatile and dynamic performer himself, was by saying that Bobby Darin was "the only person I never wanted to follow" after he is take him to Las Vegas.

This had a significant Role in promoting new talent. Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson and Wayne Newton opened his night club performances when they were virtually unknown. Early on in Copacabana, insisted that he act black comedy George Kirby his opening speech. His request was granted reluctantly by Jules Podell, director of the Copacabana.

In the 1960s, Darin also owned and operated a highly successful music publishing and production company (TM Music / Trio) and signed Wayne Newton to TM, and gave him a song that was originally sent to Darin to record. The record went on to Newton's breakout hit "Danke Schoen." He was also a mentor, Roger McGuinn, the for Darius at TM Music worked and played the 12-string guitar It nightclub band before forming his to The Byrds. It also produced football great Rosey Grier in 1964 LP, Soul City "and" in the Shade "Jimmy Boyd Made.

The two the latter were on Capitol Records, which he joined in 1962, in Atlantic before returning four years later. The song "Things" was sung by Dean Martin in the 1967 TV special Movin 'With Nancy, Nancy Sinatra, the home video was released in 2000.
