Lead Guitar Exercises Scales

I'm having problems with rock guitar solos …?
I have 13 years and I have self taught the guitar for 3 years. Play in a band Lead in school, but I am being threatened with being fired if my own are not improving. I know that the minor and major blues and pentatonic scales, but each base i just they sounds corny and too much like a fingering exercise rather than a single. PS We play like Guns N 'Roses if that helps!
