Learn to play by ear

So maybe you've learned the basic chords or scales on their respective instruments. You've been working on his technique and is starting to come together. There are a couple of songs that you like to play and sound good. When you play your ax, which is starting to get an idea of when it is really in tune. What now?

I I can not emphasize enough the importance of being able to play by ear . Everything I've heard anyone play on your instrument at your disposal – just to understand. Learn to play songs or parts of the instrument by ear is the same anything else that practice: the more you do, the easier it gets. If you do this often enough, you do not even need an instrument to find out. The concept of teaching your ear to decipher musical structures as they are playing is called ear training and has been practiced and perfected over centuries.

If you're interested in learning to play guitar by ear, or almost any other instrument for that matter, there are some excellent learning aids available to help! The current state of learning aids for the ear training is very well these days (thanks for asking). With a variety of books, CDs, DVDs and software, even, there are plenty to choose from when you decide to add this important ability in its arsenal:

Ear training books –

In the world of music, there are two renowned institutions of learning, Berklee College of Music in Boston, and the Musicians Institute (MI) in Los Angeles. Both have their own views on ear training. For Berklee, is training key ear for contemporary music and for me, is the ear training – The complete guide to all musicians. Walking home, which makes a great variety of books, CDs and DVDs for all musicians and styles, have their shot, which is the ear training for instrumentalists with a whopping 6 CDs full of exercises and drills. If you are a guitar player or bass, will no doubt want Eartraining last visit for guitar and bass by Gary Willis Tribal Tech. My friend Chris, an electric jazz bassist working in New York, I love this book.

Ear training videos –

Playing guitar by ear, or almost any other instrument for that matter, is not as hard as you may think! For videos, Berklee has produced Harmonic Ear Training (DVD). This DVD of 73 minutes will help to recognize chord progressions quickly and listen to music more analytically. Bears get a real pleasure, like the great jazz bassist John Patitucci has released John Patitucci – Electric Bass 2: Soloing ear-Training and Six-String Technique video, which teaches solos emphasizing the importance of training ear.

Ear Training Software –

As expected, software is a natural choice for teaching training ear, because it is interactive. The cream of the crop is Ars Nova Practica Musica that is compatible with Windows and Macintosh, covering almost all aspects of ear training, and features customized workouts. Ear Training Coach is a more affordable option and offers a curriculum of 10 degree ear training and music theory. However, Part of the resistance and the tool to be held in each ear training is SlowGold CD-ROM. This ingenious piece of software allows you to slow down any piece of CD or MP3 music without changing the pitch. So if you're learning to play an excerpt from a recording, and is very fast, runs only through SlowGold hear every note in the exact tone he has played.

Ear Training Computer –

As expected, OEMs music have gotten into the game ear training, and not surprisingly, the offerings are particularly good for electric guitar and bass. The Tascam CD-GT1 MKII Guitar Trainer and the Tascam CD-BT1 mkII Bass Guitar Trainer provides the software technology itself SlowGold slowdown, but they have located in a separate unit with a built-in CD player effects and a headphone jack for silent practice. Tascam has even made one of the vocalists, the Tascam CD-VT1 Portable CD Vocal and Performance Coach, which has a characteristic Vocal Cancel removes the vocals to the CD during playback. Learning tips aside, a very useful exercise is to select a recording of a simple melody that you like. Listen carefully. See if you can determine when the band is changing chords. If you can choose where these changes occur chord, then you know that the points in time when you need to determine what the next chord is.

Tune your instrument recording. Take the first chord of the song. As theater, try to select a low note on the instrument that best matches the chord. No one should note that resonates recording. Now that has its root, the next step is to determine the quality of the rope. Is it a major or minor chord? Is it a power chord? One sure way to determine this is trial and error. Assume is a major chord. Evidence of this ability to play the major chord to its tonic, along with the recording. Sound good? Is it an echo? If so, you just realize so the first chord is. If not, try a minor chord. Touch the minor chord to its tonic, along with the recording. Sound good? Does this resonate? Try the different options. If you get stumped, look at the score or transcript of this recording. This is the answer key, so to speak. After you've discovered the first chord, go to the next point in time where this change and find out what the second chord is. Repeat process until you have covered the whole melody. Much of popular music is cyclical in that the same chord pattern often repeated 4.3 to over melody, so you do not have to guess more than 3-4 chords the whole song. Yes, when bands write great songs with just "three chords and an attitude" that makes your job much easier.

So why do you want to do this? Well, first, is the improvement of the ear. Second, is improving their knowledge of chords, because you are forced to play a variety of chords. If you know your tone of a particular chord is an F #, but you do not know what quality is, you may need to try a F # chord, a chord of F # minor, F # 7 chord, and so on. This solidifies the knowledge of chords through the parameters of your instrument. The melodies to find, the easier it is to find and play these chords. The other benefit of going through this process is that you're playing along with recordings that are going to do is playing better, because you're unconsciously absorb every nuance of the recording your game.

The main thing is not to sit around and do it on a regular basis. Turn on the radio and try your hand in everything that is playing. If you do not like the song, change the station. Set to classical station – yes, you can play along with the classics as well. Do not be afraid. It's all just music, and finally, armed with only one ear and the knowledge of some basic chords for the trial and error, you can find a way to play.
