Davy Graham – Guitar Hero Of The Folk Era
If you enjoy playing acoustic guitar music, you will most likely heard of Davy Graham. Some people believe He is the founder of the world music genre, some believe he invented the DADGAD guitar tuning.
Davy Graham was born in England in 1940. He grew up in the era of "Beatnik" the date the values of the society of young intellectuals were called into question and the traditions of music have been challenged by the interest of young people in jazz. The changes in society, which began in the nineteen forties and fifties included the widespread use of drugs, and Davy Graham's career was all destroyed, but by his drug abuse.
Davy's guitar playing were rooted in folk music, but his interests were much wider. Jazz began many musicians in the fifties, and this in turn influenced folk guitar players like Davy Graham led in unexpected directions. One of these directions was to the music of the Middle East. It was common for players of the slide guitar from the standard EADGBE tuning, but differ to Davy Graham began tuning his guitar to DADGAD there was no alternative tuning for guitarists interested in improvisation.
Davy Graham DADGAD tuning guitar was a way of maintaining a majority support while exploring new melodic and harmonic possibilities of the piece they played. This was has done a step further than just tuning the guitar to an open chord as a slide guitar player often.
If the DADGAD tuning started with Davy Graham, it is ironic that his most famous composition is played with standard tuning. In the early sixties, a melody Davy named "Angie" composed, named after his girlfriend. The piece is basically a series of three reefs and every guitarist who has recorded, has its own variations over the existing reef to cause or his own. The theme, which drives the piece is a descending chord progression of A minor, G, F and E. This is a progression you in many different styles of music used in many ways, but found "Angie" seemed to fire the imagination of everyone who heard it. The notation of the melody appeared as "Anji" on Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds Of Silence" album.
Apart from Paul Simon, Davey Graham's guitar innovations sixties influenced many other guitarists in the next twenty years. Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and the members of the folk-rock fusion bands such as Fairport Convention and Pentangle debt to Davy Graham.
